Myanmar's Dictatorship Set to Execute 5 Pro-Democracy Activists Today!
The Myanmar dictatorship is set to execute five pro-democracy activists today (September 24), accused of murdering a police officer in 2021. Activists and human rights defenders, both in Myanmar and neighboring countries, are raising concerns about these unjust death sentence, highlighting the military's use of capital punishment as a tool to suppress dissent.
The five activists facing execution include Kaung Pyae Sone Oo, Kyaw Win Soe, San Min Aung, Zayyar Phyo, and Myat Phyo Pwint, who have been on death row since May 18, 2023, after a closed trial at Insein Prison in Yangon. They were charged with murder and illegal weapons possession for their involvement in a deadly shooting on a Yangon train in 2021, under multiple laws, including the 1949 Arms Act and the 2014 Anti-Terrorism Law.
Human rights groups assisting political prisoners in Myanmar have reported that since March, over 164 people have been sentenced to death following the 2021 coup, intensifying resistance against the military and armed forces.
