Andrea Spakova: "People and the Planet must be put over profit!"
#CorporateAccountability ⚖️ Watch the intervention of our Advocacy and Campaign Associate Andrea Spakova at the Asia-Pacific Regional Forum on Minority Issues and help us spread the word to demand #PeopleOverProfit! 🗣
The Asia-Pacific Regional Forum on Minority Issues was held on 14-15 June 2022, marking the 30th Anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious, and Linguistic Minorities. The forum focused on building stronger protection mechanisms for minorities in the region.
👉 Andrea Spakova revealed the tragic situation of the minority and indigenous groups whose rights are put aside due to corporate impunity:
🚩"For too long, the international community relied on voluntary commitments, pledges, and nonbinding international standards to manage the operations of business entities. But up until now, none of these has been able to protect Asia's minorities and indigenous peoples from the disastrous negative impacts of extractive industries, infrastructural mega-projects or tourism development, among others." - Andrea Spakova 🙌
❗ What did Andrea call for in her intervention? 🗣️
✅ Adoption of the international legally binding instrument on transnational corporations and mandatory human rights due diligence;
✅ Protection of minority and indigenous human rights defenders;
✅ Recognition of indigenous peoples' right to self-determination and their free, prior, and informed consent, including in any climate action that affects them.
✅ Safeguards compliant with international human rights to be adopted by international economic institutions such as the World Bank;
✅ Human Rights Impact Assessment (HRIA) to be conducted by companies and international economic institutions.
✊ Two of Manushya's recommendations focused on international economic institutions' safeguards and HRIA were also included in the final set of recommendations that will inform the work of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on minority issues and the global UN Forum on Minority Issues in December 2022.
