BARBARIC: Myanmar revives death penalty, executes four democracy activists!

🚹 In a shocking update, the #Myanmar military junta claims to have executed democracy activists Phyo Zeya Thaw, Ko Jimmy, Hla Myo Aung, and Aung Thura Zaw on charges of committing "terror acts." We must #RememberTheirNames.

All four activists underwent closed-door trials and were handed the sentences back in January. The junta has not disclosed the precise date and method of execution used. Some family members also did not receive prior notification, and are still awaiting news on when they will receive the bodies.

This is Myanmar's first series of death sentences in three decades. It marks a new low for the state of fundamental rights under the #junta administration, who has been systematically cracking down on pro-democracy movements since it came to power last year.

⛔ The death penalty is considered a form of arbitrary deprivation of life and a serious violation of the protection from torture or cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment under international human rights law. Countries are strongly advised to abolish it. Today's news necessitates a stronger coordinated effort by the international community, in particular, ASEAN, to acknowledge #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar and sanction the junta for its blatant disregard of human dignity.

#WeAreManushyan ♟ Equal Human Beings

âœŠđŸŒ Manushya Foundation urges the junta to:

  1. Place a moratorium on any pending executions with the view of achieving its full abolition from the domestic penal system;

  2. Review the sentences of all inmates currently sitting on death row and guarantee that proceedings in each case are carried out in full compliance with the principles of fair trial and due process;

  3. Disclose details on the executions of Phyo Zeya Thaw, Ko Jimmy, Hla Myo Aung, and Aung Thura Zaw, and make information on any other delivered death sentences and pending executions publicly available, including but not limited to the identities of inmates or those executed, underlying convictions, and procedures followed;

  4. Ensure, without delay, the safe return of the bodies of Phyo Zeya Thaw, Ko Jimmy, Hla Myo Aung, and Aung Thura Zaw to their respective family members;

  5. Ratify and bring its actions in line with the the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and its Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights aiming to the abolition of the death penalty, and the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
