#BreakingNews: Pro-democracy activist “ARNON Nampa” sentenced to 4 years in jail without parole
🚨Today, on September 26, 2023, "Arnon Nampa,” a prominent human rights lawyer and a key political activist, was found guilty of violating #Article112 of the Thai Criminal Code, the #LèseMajesté law, and breaching the #EmergencyDecree during his participation in the pro-democracy protest on 14 October 2020.
Arnon was handed four years of imprisonment and a substantial fine of 20,000 THB. The case now awaits consideration by the Appeal Court for possible bail, a process which is expected to take additional 2-3 days.
Currently, Arnon is detained in Bangkok Remand Prison, awaiting further legal proceedings while being held in custody pending the Appeal Court’s decision.
However, that is NOT ALL!
Arnon is facing 13 pending charges, each carrying sentences ranging from 3 to 15 years. In the worst-case scenario of convictions on all counts, the cumulative sentences could extend from 42 to 210 years.
The pursuit of justice continues. ⚖️🇹🇭

Our Call to Action!
✊Manushya stands in solidarity with Arnon and all pro-democracy activists facing judicial harassment, and everyone fighting for democracy in Thailand and Asia. We vehemently condemn the abuse of the lèse-majesté law, and we call on the Thai government to respect its international human rights obligations regarding the right to freedom of expression and information, laid down in Article 19 of the UDHR and ICCPR. It must also comply with the UPR recommendations on freedom of expression, including the revision of Article 112, which it received during its 3rd UPR cycle. There is no #Democracy in the criminalization of activists and #HRDs!
