#BungThaluwang 🪻Rest in Power, Bung Netiporn

🌼It has been two days since Bung’s passing. We, along with countless other Thais who were touched by Bung’s fearless and powerful activism, continue to grieve in solidarity with her loved ones.

🕊️On May 14th, 2024, 28-year-old pro-democracy activist Netiporn ‘Bung’ Sanesangkhom passed away in jail due to cardiac arrest. It must be emphasized that the reason she was put in this fatal position to begin with was because she had been on hunger strike, protesting the unjust Thai judicial system, that weaponises lèse-majesté legislation (namely, #Section112 charges) against Thais exercising freedom of expression.

🗣️Bung herself was charged with lèse-majesté, and had her bail revoked. Her hunger strike was a protest against what was imposed against her, as well as a protest against the systemic injustice of the Thai Establishment.

🫀Some people cannot even begin to fathom the level of fearlessness, principle, and commitment it requires to go on hunger strike, or other forms of extreme protest. The fact that Bung, and so many other young Thai activists, feel the need to resort to this form of protest says a lot about the state of Thai society. We encourage us all to deeply think about what this means, and how we can collectively demand change.

✊In the words of Manushya Foundation’s Founder and Executive Director, Emilie Palamy Pradichit, the loss of Bung must be a “wake-up call for the dinosaur generation, the establishment, and the state.” How many young Thais need to take to the streets, risk their mental health, risk their physical health, or risk having their human rights brutally denied by the State, for the rest of Thai society to take action?

❤️‍🔥Bung’s legacy will live on forever in the hearts of those who love her, learned from her, and were mobilized by her. Justice for Bung must be served, and this will only happen once we see tangible changes in the Establishment.
