#DecolonisingWellbeing đSending love to all who are not feeling the âholiday spiritâ
â¤ď¸â𩹠While the âholiday seasonâ can be a great time to celebrate, reflect, and spend quality time with our loved ones, we need to recognise that nobody is âobligatedâ to subscribe to the âholiday spirit.â As we approach the end of the â2024th year of the Common Era,â letâs recognise that there are many reasons why people of the Global Majority might have complex thoughts and feelings about this time. Even through the âholiday season,â some continue to endure grief, genocide, displacement, loneliness, exhaustion, burnout, and other issues that might affect their physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental wellbeing.Â
đŤ Thus, while celebration and joy are deserved, letâs simultaneously hold respect and space for those who might not be in the mood for celebration and joy at this current moment. Today, we send our heartfelt solidarity to those whoâŚ
âŚare experiencing and fighting unjust, systemic violence, including displacement and genocide.
âŚfeel alienated or excluded by those who are supposed to act as their communities.
âŚreject the capitalist co-optation of their sacred celebrations during the âholiday season.â
âŚhave religious or other trauma related to this time of year.
âŚare grieving loved ones, wishing they were celebrating with us.
đ¤ In addition, especially for those of us with an abundance of joy and blessings in our lives, letâs reflect on how we can share these with those who do not have the same access. Whether it be through reaching out to someone grieving a loved one to offer a space to talk about them, sharing a meal, redistributing wealth, or offering companionship to those who feel alone, letâs use this time to take action in building the kinds of relationships we want to see in this world.Â
