Domestic Violence is a Crime! The Matricide Case at Bang Phrom, Thailand

He hit his mom every day and the police did NOTHING! They did not care until she died!

Domestic violence is a crime! And we need your help to stop it!

In Thailand, during the past week, one of the most talked-about issues for Thai netizens was the shocking news of the murder case in Bang Phrom, Bangkok #ฆ่าแม่บางพรม54. A man murdered his mother and was later shot to death by the police. The man has been abusing his mother for years and people in the neighborhood have reported him so many times. BUT the police had never arrested him! Not even once!

“They should have arrested him when we said ‘he hits his mom every day!’” said the neighbor.

The police failed at doing their job. For the police officers, it was just a ‘family issue’ to be resolved by the family… but this is so wrong for the police to think this way! Do they know that domestic violence is a crime in Thailand under the 2007 Domestic Violence Protection Act in place for the past 14 years!!!

And yet, this is not the first time something like this happened; it keeps happening over and over again!

Dad hits mom. Mom hits dad.

Parents hit their kids. Kids hit their parents.

Sometimes the police are alerted, and often the police ignore the voices of survivors.

This matricide case at Bang Phrom demonstrates how the police are incompetent, YES – INCOMPETENT at doing their job to protect us from domestic violence and allowing us to access justice! They just don’t care. They don’t give a damn. It’s annoying to them. It’s just a bother to them.

BUT WHY IS THAT? Domestic violence has been a deep-rooted problem in the Thai culture, mostly because it has been justified and considered a family issue, a private matter. The police tend to ignore the voices of survivors. They have failed to realize that domestic violence is a serious societal problem and it is ultimately a crime. For the police, it will just be another case to be filed away and forgotten anyhow. It’s not a big deal.

This is the ugly and vicious circle of domestic violence in Thailand.

But Domestic Violence is illegal. Domestic violence IS a CRIME.

At the end of the day, is justice for all just another beautiful lie that we have to live with when so many people still cannot get protection when they are abused?

How many people will have to get hurt before the police decide to take this seriously? ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

Now Manushya Foundation and SHero are working together to end this vicious circle. We will not let this matter fade away quietly. We will continue to monitor and push forward until the police actually put into practice the law to protect the Thai citizens from all kinds of domestic violence.

And we need your help to speak up against inaction and insensitivity of authorities in domestic violence cases. Join us to make this movement stronger and louder.
