#ElderlyRights: We Need to Care for our Elders!

On October 1st, the World celebrates the International Day of Older Persons! Thai seniors face a lack of protection from abuse and discrimination, and limited access to adequate pensions, care and support, especially during these very straining times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Help spread the word on #WhatsHappeningInThailand to push for #ElderlyRights!

The question of Elderly Rights is a critical issue to be addressed as Thailand is going through a fast-paced demographic transition, with a population share of the elderly projected to increase to around 30% by 2035.

We need to make sure that all Thai elderly:

✓have access to a fair pension and proper care

✓are protected legally against abuse and discrimination

✓are supported during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has impacted them most

On 10 November 2021, Thailand is going to be reviewed on all its human rights records by the United Nations, a critical time to bring many issues to the foreground! ⏰The Universal Periodic Review (UPR), the 3rd one for Thailand, is a thorough review of Thailand’s human rights record where it will be held accountable for its human rights violations in front of delegations from around the world. Each UN Member State can make recommendations with the goal to improve the human rights situation on the ground.

To make sure that the international community makes recommendations that address issues faced by even the most marginalised groups, brings concrete solutions to them and holds the government accountable for its actions, @manushyafoundation teamed up with the FOPDEV (Foundation for Older Person’s Development) to develop the UPR Advocacy Factsheet on the Rights of the Elderly informing the diplomatic community on the most pressing human rights issues that deserve attention. #VoicesOfThailand
