Exposing the Lao Government's Deceptive Claims of Supporting Women, Indigenous, and Cultural Rights
As we gear up for the upcoming Universal Periodic Review (UPR), we, the Manushya Foundation, Power By Keyboard, and the Lao Youth Network for International Accountability, are pulling back the curtain on the harsh truth behind the Lao government’s hollow promises to support women, Indigenous peoples, and cultural rights.
Our joint report, Beneath the Silence: Women, Indigenous Peoples, and Corporate Power, exposes a regime that thrives on lies. While the Lao government spins tales of progress, we’re here to reveal their shameful hypocrisy:
1️⃣ Women's Rights & Human Trafficking: They boast about “initiatives” while overlooking the staggering number of vulnerable workers exploited right under their noses. Their so-called justice system is a farce, prioritising corruption over real solutions.
2️⃣ Business & Human Rights: The government may flaunt its “ethnic diversity,” but Indigenous Peoples are treated as mere footnotes, stripped of rights and recognition. Their greedy projects benefit the corrupt elite while local communities are left to suffer the consequences.
3️⃣ Indigenous Rights: The pandemic has revealed the government's grotesque neglect of Indigenous communities, who face staggering unemployment rates while the Lao-Tai majority is barely scraping by. Their hollow claims of development ring painfully false.
