How we seek Justice before the UN to #SaveSabWaiVillagers from forced evictions and extreme poverty
#Urgent šØ #SaveSabWaiVillagers š Manushya Foundation submitted a Complaint for Urgent Action to the United Nations to demand protection for 14 Sab Wai villagers facing human rights violations due to Thailand's False Climate Solutions.
šAs a result of 2021 Supreme Court verdicts, the Sab Wai Villagers are on the brink of a ruthless eviction plan, where they can be moved out of their house and land at any time. They will be displaced and without alternative arable land, they will face homelessness and extreme poverty.
#JustTransition #ClimateJustice āš¼ Manushya Foundation and the Sai Thong Rak Pah Network officially submitted a Complaint for Urgent Action for Protection of the 14 Sab Wai Villagers to the United Nations Special Procedures on August 4th, 2022. The complaint shows that so far, the Thai government has been ignoring its own International Human Rights obligations and climate action commitments.
The Complaint highlights and denounces the looming forced evictions and recent threats against the Sab Wai villagers, and brings attention to the future negative impacts of the evictions on the 14 villagers and their families. Besides the loss of access to food and income, losing access to arable land would make the community more vulnerable to climate change impacts.
šThe Thai government's ongoing false climate solutions have devastatingly impacted local communities such as the Sab Wai villagers. They do not effectively tackle the climate emergency and instead, further contribute to #ClimateInjustice.
"The Sab Wai villagers, similarly to communities from all over Thailand, become scapegoats of policies that sacrifice people rather than holding corporations, the real culprits of climate change, accountable", said Emilie Palamy Pradichit, Founder & Executive Director of Manushya Foundation & International Human Rights Lawyer.
āš¼ Manushya Foundation stands with the Sab Wai villagers and denounces Thailand's false climate solutions. We urge the Thai Government to ensure the protection of #SabWaiVillagers from forced evictions and extreme poverty, as it is obliged to do under International Human Rights Law, and demand the Thai Government to adopt a Just, Inclusive, Green, and Feminist Transition, where marginalized communities at put at the center!
