šŸ”āš–ļø International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its AbolitionšŸ“œšŸ”—

šŸŒšŸšØ On International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, we reflect on how the 13th Amendmentā€™s loophole perpetuates a legacy of exploitation. This legal exception allows slavery to persist under the guise of "punishment for crime," fueling the prison-industrial complex and disproportionately targeting Black and Brown communities.

šŸ”— From convict leasing in the post-Civil War South to the War on Drugs and beyond, this loophole has been weaponized to maintain racial and economic oppression.Ā

šŸŒ Around the world, forced labor exists in penal systems, from Brazil to China. The international day reminds us that this issue is global, and demands global action. Letā€™s close this loophole and honor the memory of those who fought against slavery by fighting for true freedom today. āœŠšŸ½šŸ—£ļø
