#JustTransition Why We Must Continue to Demand Justice For the Survivors of the Attapeu Dam Collapse
#ClimateJustice #JustTransition đâď¸ Why we must continue to demand justice for the survivors of the Attapeu dam collapse!!
âď¸ For communities in the Attapeu province of Southern Laos, the 2018 Xe-Pian Xe-Namnoy dam collapse is still fresh in their memory. The disaster destroyed entire villages, and more than 7,000 people were displaced, with at least 71 people dead or missing. However, the Lao government and companies behind the project have done little to address the situation, leaving survivors in a never-ending crisis.
đ Because efforts to repair the damage during the past years have been far from enough, Manushya Foundation submitted a follow-up complaint to relevant human rights experts at the UN (United Nations) in February. In this UN complaint, we highlighted the numerous human rights violations of the Attapeu communities, as well as how a lack of attention from the Government has had a serious impact on their lives.
đ Last week, we officially published the complaint to remember four years after the collapse and to remind those responsible that justice needs to be delivered. Attapeu is not the first to experience a catastrophe of this kind and, without accountability, it certainly would not be the last.
âđź Manushya Foundation stands in solidarity with the affected communities in their pursuit of justice and rights to reparations. âWe will always stand by the survivors and affected communities who lost their livelihoods in the Lao dam collapse until their demands are met, full restoration of their livelihoods guaranteed, and justice is given,â said Emilie Palamy Pradichit, Manushya Foundation's Founder and Executive Director.
âđź The Lao government must bring about a Just, Inclusive, Green, and Feminist Transition, put marginalized communities at the center, and ensure that corporates - the real culprits of the climate crisis - take responsibility!
