(RECAP) AP-BHR FORUM

Last week, Manushya was at the Asia Pacific Responsible Business & Human Rights Forum. Together with OECD Watch, AIPNEE, CEMSOJ and Korean House for International Solidarity we held a side session to discuss Thailand’s application to the OECD and the effective use by civil society of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct.

Also featuring UNDP Asia-Pacific

Manushya provided an overview of Thailand’s business & human rights framework which is currently only made up of the weak National Action Plan as it does not impose obligations on companies. This leads to lack of accountability and impunity. As an exemple, Phichit villagers who have been facing the negative impact of gold mining for 2 decades still have not received reparation.

As a grievance mechanism specialised on responsible business conduct, the National Contact Point offers the possibility to mediate with companies, including foreign parent companies while following the standards set in the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.

Thailand’s application to the OECD is an opportunity to ensure companies are held accountable.

Civil society has a key role to play throughout Thailand’s accession process to inform the OECD about Thailand’s context and gaps in law. On its part, Thailand must involve civil society to strengthen its legal framework to ensure compliance with international standards on business & human rights.
