#StopDigitalDictatorship: Journalists in SEA face unprecedented threats!
#StopDigitalDictatorship šµ Journalists in SEA face unprecedented threats! ā¬ļø New collab with IG: @ivana_kurniawati.
āļø As democracy is eroding throughout Southeast Asia, so is freedom of speech in the online space. In an attempt to silence critics, governments have harassed journalists by prosecuting and imprisoning them, especially during COVID-19, and even shut down news outlets.
ā ļø Abuse of laws such as these is only aimed to create an environment of fear, making it difficult to demand change and a better society. ā”ļø Check the slides above to find out more about some of the most concerning cases in the past years!
š Together with the ASEAN Regional Coalition to #StopDigitalDictatorship, we sent a submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression, highlighting the threats to media the digital age. It will be soon available on our website.
The UNSR thematic report on the opportunities, challenges and threats to media in the digital age was made public on the 24th of June, and our contribution is acknowledged. Please access it here.
