🛑 #StopTransnationalRepression - Lao police have handed over 17 Myanmar nationals to illegal junta soldiers at the northern Golden Triangle border, in what is a disturbing first for the state. 


🤝 The illegal junta claimed they were supporting a People's Defense Force Militia and sent in a list of names to Lao authorities, however several locals claim they were arrested while collecting funds for displaced families in Laos. This is a blatant act of TRANSNATIONAL REPRESSION. 


⛓️ In recent years, authorities in the Mekong region have conducted unlawful deportations of Myanmar migrants, failing to apply stringent criteria to distinguish their genuine need for protection. Furthermore, the collaboration of the Lao government and the illegal junta to hunt down dissenters across the border means that these activists and refugees have nowhere to escape. 


💰 Since the military coup, over 40,000 Myanmar nationals have sought refuge in Laos, many working in Chinese-controlled special economic zones notorious for casinos where money laundering, human and drug trafficking are rampant. 


📣 Manushya Foundation condemns this gross human rights violation, and stresses that we must hold states and law enforcement accountable for this unjust asylum system, and regional persecution.
