#JustTransition: Why we need to Save Nabon community?
#ClimateJustice #JustTransition For more than one year, the #SaveNabon group has demanded the Thai government to conduct a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of a biomass-burning power plant project that proposes to build two power plants in their neighborhoods.
The 'renewable energy' power plant that uses a waste-to-energy (WtE) system turns out to be a pollution generator that puts the community's health in danger. This 'renewable energy' solution only becomes a false climate solution that violates people's rights in the same way as fossil fuels. But the Thai government keeps ignoring the facts and lets the Nabon people slowly die!
The Nabon community staged a week-long protest in July 2022 in Bangkok. On 25 July, a Government representative finally came out to talk to the group and promised to conduct an effective and sound Strategic Environmental Assessment. Yet as of now, three weeks later, there are no updates on any government action to fulfill their promise!
#WeAreManushyan ♾️ Equal Human Beings
✊🏼 Manushya Foundation denounces the false climate solutions of the Thai government and we stand with Nabon villagers in their request for a prompt SEA process! We also demand the Government to:
1️⃣ Put first a Just, Inclusive, Green, and Feminist Transition with communities at the center.
2️⃣ The Government must immediately conduct the Strategic Environmental Assessment.
3️⃣ Remove WtE from the energy policy of Thailand and exclude it from all forms of climate financing.
