Women Human Rights Defenders push back against SLAPP charges!
#CorporateAccountability #StopSLAPP đ© Marking a comeback to the UN Asia-Pacific Responsible Business & Human Rights Forum #RBHRF2022 after 3 years, Manushya Foundation proudly supported two women human rights defenders (WHRDs) Premsinee Sintontammatuch & Nada Chaiyajit to push back against the Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP) that they currently face!
đŁ Together with Manushya Foundation, Premsinee and Nada submitted complaints denouncing the SLAPP charges to Ms. Pichamon Yeophantong, a member of the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights (UNWG) during a closed-door session of the Forum. They demand UN Independent Human Rights experts to investigate their SLAPP cases and request the Thai government to protect HRDs and not criminalize them! đš But Why are these prominent WHRDs being sued? đ
#SavePremsinee #JusticeForPhichit đš The Woman Community Leader Premsinee has been sued by a gold mining company that had destroyed the health and livelihoods of her community in Phichit and Phetchabun provinces and that tried to silence opponents of gold mining for the last 13 years. Premsinee has been sued for allegedly providing false testimony before a court (section 177 of the criminal code). The SLAPP charge came after she unfairly lost a court case where she demanded compensation for the damage to her house caused by mining operations.
#SaveNada đš Nada Chaiyajit, prominent LGBTIQ+ rights defender & Manushya Foundationâs Human Rights Campaign Advisor, faces a SLAPP case filed after she denounced the sexual harassment of a transgender woman at a workplace on her social media. Nada was then sued by the perpetrator, a well-known politician from the Move Forward Party (MFP) for defamation and multiple distinct offenses. The made-up allegation seriously breaches Nada's digital rights!
â ïž SLAPPs are a common tool of corporations to silence, harass, intimidate, and exhaust human rights defenders fighting against impunity and obstruct their legitimate human rights work, often in the online space. Premsinee and Nada are examples of the incapability of the Thai government to protect its people against corporate greed and ensure the safe enjoyment of all rights, including digital rights!
â Telling the truth is not a crime! Women Human Rights Defenders must be protected for their legitimate human rights work and for defending their rights, in line with the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, adopted by Thailand!
