šØ #WorldDayAgainstCyberCensorship šµš
12 March 2025āOn World Day Against Cyber Censorship, letās be reminded that #censorship thrives on obedience. š„ Reject it. Resist it. Speak louder.Ā š„
šµ 1. What is Cyber Censorship?
The internet was meant to be a tool of liberationāa space for free expression. Instead, the ruling class and governments worldwide have turned it into a weapon of control.
Governments shut down networksĀ šµ, imprison dissidentsĀ āļø, and erase truthsĀ that threaten their power.
Big Tech, hand in hand with the state, decides who gets to speak and who is silencedĀ šāall in the name of āsafetyā and āpolicy.ā
From Palestine to Southeast Asia, censorship is never about protection; itās about preserving power.Ā Itās about crushing resistance, suppressing solidarity, and ensuring that only the elite control the narrative.
š®āāļø 2. How Are Governments Perpetrating Cyber Censorship?
š« Websites are blocked, and networks are shut down.
š Social media posts are erased.
āļø Journalists, activists, and ordinary people are imprisonedĀ for speaking the truth online.
Censorship is not about safetyāitās about power.Ā Itās about controlling information, silencing dissent, and crushing resistance.
In Southeast Asia, voices are being erased, surveilled, and criminalized:
š®š© IndonesiaĀ ā LGBTQ+ websites and political content are blocked under vague āmoralityā laws.
š²š¾ MalaysiaĀ ā Independent news sites shut down under the Anti-Fake News Act.
š²š² MyanmarĀ ā The military cut off the internet for months after the 2021 coup, blocking access to news and social media.
šµš The PhilippinesĀ ā The Anti-Terrorism Act is used to label activists and journalists as āterroristsā for speaking out.
š¹š ThailandĀ ā The Computer Crimes Act (CCA) is weaponized to arrest dissidents who challenge the regime.
š 3. What About Big Tech?
Censorship is real. Freedom is at risk.Governments arenāt the only ones silencing voicesāBig Tech is complicit.
#FreePalestine ā Activists and journalists reporting from Gaza see their content erased, while calls for Palestinian freedom are wrongly flagged as "incitement to violence."
šµ Facebook has repeatedly silenced Palestinian voices.
ā Posts are deleted.
ā ļø Accounts are suspended.
šµšø #FreePalestine hashtags are blocked.š«
#StandWithRohingya ā Hate Speech vs. Rohingya People
ā ļø Hate speech against the Rohingya is not just wordsāit fuels real-world violence, systemic discrimination, and democratic backsliding. Meanwhile, Big Tech profits from the spread of hate while silencing those who resist.
š”Ā 4. What Can We Do?
š Use encrypted communicationĀ to protect privacy.
š Adopt decentralized platformsĀ to bypass surveillance.
š”ļø Use VPNs and TorĀ to counter state-imposed firewalls.
š° Support independent mediaācorporate news serves the ruling class, not the people.
Censorship thrives on obedience.Ā So reject it. Resist it. Speak louder.Ā š„
Because right now, fascism isnāt knocking on the doorāitās already inside, and weāre just playing hide and seek.
They cannot silence us all.Ā āš¢š„
