šŸšØ #WorldDayAgainstCyberCensorship šŸ“µšŸŒ

12 March 2025ā€”On World Day Against Cyber Censorship, letā€™s be reminded that #censorship thrives on obedience. šŸ”„ Reject it. Resist it. Speak louder.Ā šŸ”„

šŸ“µ 1. What is Cyber Censorship?

The internet was meant to be a tool of liberationā€”a space for free expression. Instead, the ruling class and governments worldwide have turned it into a weapon of control.

Governments shut down networksĀ šŸ“µ, imprison dissidentsĀ ā›“ļø, and erase truthsĀ that threaten their power.

Big Tech, hand in hand with the state, decides who gets to speak and who is silencedĀ šŸ”‡ā€”all in the name of ā€œsafetyā€ and ā€œpolicy.ā€

From Palestine to Southeast Asia, censorship is never about protection; itā€™s about preserving power.Ā Itā€™s about crushing resistance, suppressing solidarity, and ensuring that only the elite control the narrative.

šŸ‘®ā€ā™€ļø 2. How Are Governments Perpetrating Cyber Censorship?

šŸš« Websites are blocked, and networks are shut down.

šŸ›‘ Social media posts are erased.

ā›“ļø Journalists, activists, and ordinary people are imprisonedĀ for speaking the truth online.

Censorship is not about safetyā€”itā€™s about power.Ā Itā€™s about controlling information, silencing dissent, and crushing resistance.

In Southeast Asia, voices are being erased, surveilled, and criminalized:

  • šŸ‡®šŸ‡© IndonesiaĀ ā€“ LGBTQ+ websites and political content are blocked under vague ā€œmoralityā€ laws.

  • šŸ‡²šŸ‡¾ MalaysiaĀ ā€“ Independent news sites shut down under the Anti-Fake News Act.

  • šŸ‡²šŸ‡² MyanmarĀ ā€“ The military cut off the internet for months after the 2021 coup, blocking access to news and social media.

  • šŸ‡µšŸ‡ The PhilippinesĀ ā€“ The Anti-Terrorism Act is used to label activists and journalists as ā€˜terroristsā€™ for speaking out.

  • šŸ‡¹šŸ‡ ThailandĀ ā€“ The Computer Crimes Act (CCA) is weaponized to arrest dissidents who challenge the regime.

šŸŒ 3. What About Big Tech?

Censorship is real. Freedom is at risk.Governments arenā€™t the only ones silencing voicesā€”Big Tech is complicit.

#FreePalestine ā€“ Activists and journalists reporting from Gaza see their content erased, while calls for Palestinian freedom are wrongly flagged as "incitement to violence."

šŸ“µ Facebook has repeatedly silenced Palestinian voices.

āŒ Posts are deleted.

āš ļø Accounts are suspended.

šŸ‡µšŸ‡ø #FreePalestine hashtags are blocked.šŸš«

#StandWithRohingya ā€“ Hate Speech vs. Rohingya People

āš ļø Hate speech against the Rohingya is not just wordsā€”it fuels real-world violence, systemic discrimination, and democratic backsliding. Meanwhile, Big Tech profits from the spread of hate while silencing those who resist.

šŸ’”Ā 4. What Can We Do?

šŸ” Use encrypted communicationĀ to protect privacy.

šŸŒ Adopt decentralized platformsĀ to bypass surveillance.

šŸ›”ļø Use VPNs and TorĀ to counter state-imposed firewalls.

šŸ“° Support independent mediaā€”corporate news serves the ruling class, not the people.

Censorship thrives on obedience.Ā So reject it. Resist it. Speak louder.Ā šŸ”„

Because right now, fascism isnā€™t knocking on the doorā€”itā€™s already inside, and weā€™re just playing hide and seek.

They cannot silence us all.Ā āœŠšŸ“¢šŸ”„

Censorship is control. Resistance is power.Ā Together, we reclaim our digital spaces!Ā
