MANUSHYA FOUNDATION'S SUBMISSION TO THE UN SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON EXTREME POVERTY AND HUMAN RIGHTS ON THE SITUATION IN LAO PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC (PDR) - MARCH 2019

The UN Human Rights Council requested that the UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights conducts a visit to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) to focus on the links between poverty and the realization of human rights in Lao PDR. The UN Special Rapporteur invited all interested individuals and organizations, including civil society organizations, activists, and academics with work related to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to provide input ahead of his visit that will take place from 18 to 28 March 2019.

In this context, Manushya Foundation submitted a report to the UN Special Rapporteur with detailed information on the poverty and human rights situation in Lao PDR. The submission covers several topics related to the impact of poverty on human rights, such as:

  • Definition of Poverty in Laos

  • International and National Legal and Policy Frameworks

  • Incidence of Poverty Among Populations

  • Impacts of Poverty on Human Rights

  • The Role of Infrastructure Projects & (Un)Sustainable Development

​

The submission also highlights good practices to promote and protect human rights as well as to tackle extreme poverty in Lao PDR. Finally, Manushya Foundation suggests the UN Special Rapporteur to make key recommendations to the Lao government, in order to find sustainable solutions to reduce extreme poverty and improve the human rights situation in the country.
